This week has been devoted to preparing the house for sale. We’ve had a team of painters here for the whole week. That meant cleaning and emptying rooms and trying to stay one step ahead of the paint brush. During this time we also had the house washed. We discovered that our garden has a beautiful sandstone edge and some of the paving stones around the place are sandstone – we never knew. Now that we’re leaving we’re starting to find out how attractive the house actually is – dohh!
In addition we’ve been packing.
It’s amazing how much STUFF two people and a dog seem to need – well maybe not actually NEED. So as part of our packing we’ve managed a bit of a purge. We had a “pod” arrive on Friday and we’ve been moving all the things we don’t intend to use while on our “travels” into it. The pod is a cage about the size of a small shipping container. It gets towed away and we can’t access it again until we want to unpack it. Some interesting discussions/decisions have been made about what to put into it.
The painting was finally completed on Friday and we’ve been cleaning and packing boxes. Danita & I are both seriously over boxes. We have some friends who left everything behind when they sold their last house. It had been beautifully furnished and decorated. At the time I couldn’t understand how they could simply walk away from all those things. Now I get it – I think they were incredibly smart.
Next Friday we move into our first house-sit. It’s a lovely house quite close to where we are, belonging to a couple of very special friends so we’re hoping the transition will be relatively painless. Saturday is the first open inspection for our house so we’re almost “on the road”.
One thing I’ve realised so far: if you want to know how strong the relationship with your partner is – move house together.
