One of the joys of house-sitting is living in other people’s homes. We get to stay in some beautiful houses in wonderful locations.
One of the problems with house-sitting is living in other people’s homes.
Now, as a male, I’m genetically predisposed to not seeing dirt and mess. However, some houses we’ve had the ‘pleasure’ of looking after challenge even my ability to ignore the state of the place.
There have been a couple of times where before cooking anything we’ve needed to thoroughly scour the kitchen and its utensils. This week we moved into such a place.
We’ve gone through more steel wool in the last couple of days than we’ve used in months.
Here’s an example with a before and after photo.

Not only was the kitchen a challenge but even the clothes line was one as well. It was covered in cobwebs and dirt. I cleaned the lines and there were still dirty marks on the washing.
After a few days of scrubbing and cleaning the house is now in a state where we feel comfortable to be in it.
Our objective is to the leave the houses in which we stay in the same or better condition when we leave. In this case I can guarantee we’ve done a great job of cleaning and sterilising.
I’m sure the owner will be delighted when she returns – but then again, maybe she won’t even notice 🙁
On the other hand, we are staying in a very pleasant suburb and living in a house in a country which is relatively safe. We’re very grateful for this and aware that we’re better off than many others.
