Our (Danita & me) big adventure this week was a night at Slide. It’s a theatre restaurant, cabaret lounge and is very gay. (I’m at the age where that means they’re happy – my, how the meaning of words can change in such a short time.)
Anyway, we were treated to tickets and had a wonderful night with great food and impressive performances.
More on all that later. The first part of the adventure was that we almost didn’t get there.
At dinner time Sancho and Milou (the household dog) had a small domestic over who’s dinner was who’s. We’ve been very diligent at making sure they eat separately but this time there was a little confusion and a brief doggy discussion – the type we’d refer to as being ‘robust’.
It was quickly sorted out but Milou went off in a huff.
(Please keep in mind that we fed them just as we were leaving. We’re living in Glaston and Slide is in Oxford St, Paddington. We needed to allow plenty of time to get there, as it involved travelling at the peak of Sydney’s peak hour and then finding parking – a challenge at the best of times even with an amenable parking angel.)
Anyway, just as we were leaving we couldn’t find Milou.
We searched the property around the house, up the street and down the bush track at the end of the road. We take our pet minding responsibilities very seriously and this was very concerning for us.
I was sure she’d return but neither Danita nor I were comfortable leaving without finding her and we knew we couldn’t enjoy the evening as we’d be worried. So, we were starting to discuss not going.
It was getting late and dark and so our chances of finding her were getting slimmer.
Walking around the street and through the bush calling for her was proving fruitless and I was beginning to wonder whether I’d started hallucinating as I thought I kept seeing her. However, instead of a small white dog it would be a post or tree branch.
Just as I was ready to give up she appeared from the house across the road. In the whole time we’d been here she hadn’t gone to that house so it was something of a surprise.
The upshot of that was, we found her, put her to bed on her leash (her normal sleeping arrangement) and headed off for the show feeling decidedly more relaxed.
And so, on to Slide!
As I mentioned, at the beginning of this post, Slide is a great place for a night out, especially if you enjoy the company of buffed male bodies. Our waiter, Reid, was very attentive, helpful and very sweet, as were most of the other staff.
The show was excellent. It started with Cruello de Vil (Cruella’s test tube baby son) followed by Matthew Mitcham (the Australian Olympic gold medallist diver) doing a special performance to introduce the main act of the evening – Spanky in Candice (pron. canned ice) McQueen: Nasty!
My take on his show was that it’s a retelling of the Orpheus in the Underworld story set in the 1990’s with River Phoenix’s lover as the central character – but I could be wrong.
This was then followed by a piano bar with performances by a number of local artists. Regrettably, we needed to leave as we’d been up since 4am and had an long drive back to Galston.
It was a wonderful night and I highly recommend Slide as a great place if you’re looking for somewhere for that special celebration or just for a fun night out.
